Do I Need to Pay Monthly for My Website? Hosting Explained

A website isn't quite a once-off purchase. Even after it's built, a few things keep it online. The good news: they're usually small, predictable costs — once you know what each one is for.
What you pay for after launch
| Cost | What it is | Typical cost in SA |
|---|---|---|
| Domain name | Your address, like yourbusiness.co.za | R100–R200 / year |
| Hosting | The server your website lives on | R100–R500 / month |
| SSL certificate | The padlock that keeps visitors safe | Often free or included |
| Maintenance | Updates, backups and small changes | Optional — fixed fee or hourly |
| Business email | you@yourbusiness.co.za | Free to a few hundred rand / month |
Your domain name
Your domain is your address on the internet. You rent it a year at a time, and it should be registered in your name — not your web designer's. If it lapses, someone else can buy it.
Hosting
Hosting is the computer your website lives on, running 24/7 so visitors can reach it. Cheap hosting can be slow, and slow sites lose visitors and rank lower on Google, so this is not the place to save every rand.
SSL — the padlock
SSL encrypts the connection between your site and its visitors. Without it, browsers show a "Not secure" warning, which scares people off. Most good hosts include it free.
Maintenance
Maintenance covers software updates, security, backups and small text or photo changes. Some sites need very little; others, especially plugin-heavy WordPress sites, need regular updates to stay secure.
Website builders vs your own website
On builders like Wix, the monthly fee covers hosting — but you're renting the whole site, and it can't be moved elsewhere. With your own website you pay hosting too, but you own the site and can move it whenever you like. More in Wix vs a custom-built website.
What it costs with us
Our websites start from R1,000 once-off, with hosting and SSL set up for you. Optional maintenance is R200–R500 a month, covering hosting, updates and small changes — no surprises, and you own the website. See the full breakdown in what a website costs in South Africa.

Typically R100 to R500 a month for a small business website, depending on the provider and what's included.
What happens if I stop paying for hosting?
